MVZ Labor Koblenz

Architecture: Highly complex and sustainable.

Vollack is constructing a laboratory and office building with a gross floor area of around 7,600 square meters for the Medical Care Center (MVZ) for Laboratory Medicine and Microbiology Koblenz-Mittelrhein, one of the most important medical laboratories in Rhineland-Palatinate. The highly complex building for around 400 employees will provide space for modern working environments, a high-throughput laboratory incorporating state-of-the-art laboratory lines, special laboratory departments and a 24/7 laboratory with an adjoining blood depot. A publicly accessible coagulation outpatient clinic and a training and meeting room where further training can take place complete the facilities.  The roof and façade design is also a key focus. The laboratory hall has been given a traditional shed roof, which provides northern light and is therefore ideal for the use of state-of-the-art laboratory analysis equipment and for reading microbiological samples. The hall façade features the regional slate with its typical layered structure.

Further design elements are the meandering white façade bands; they symbolize the confluence of the two rivers Rhine and Moselle: “Castellum apud Confluentes” the “fort at the confluence” was the Latin name for the Roman settlement at the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine, from which today's Koblenz developed. The three-storey office building and the adjoining two-storey laboratory building are designed as a solid reinforced concrete structure. The ribbon window architecture of both parts of the building allows plenty of natural light into the rooms. The new building is planned as an “Effizienzhaus 40” (Efficiency House 40) and will set a strong example for climate protection with partially greened façades, photovoltaics, an air heat pump and heat recovery via a closed-loop system. This means that the building can be operated completely without fossil heating energy. An uninterruptible power supply will ensure laboratory operations in the event of a power failure.
